Sunlight skiers end season strong in Loveland

The Sunlight Ski Team traveled to Loveland Ski Area on April 12 and 13 for the annual Loveland Derby.

The Loveland Derby is the largest amateur ski race in the country and included race teams from across Colorado, Utah, Wyoming, Idaho, Minnesota, New Mexico and Arizona. Competing racers from the Sunlight Ski Team included Kailey Murphy, Cate Simpson, Orion Adelman, Tucker Sheldrake, Aiden Partch, Skylar Adelman, Hailey Hoffman and Jonathan Simpson.

A sunny and spring-like day on Saturday yielded several top-10 slalom finishes. For the under-10 girls, Simpson was second and Murphy finished third. Adelman was fourth in the U14 girls, and Jonathan Simpson was fifth for the U14 boys.

The slalom racing action continued on April 13 with cold and snowy conditions. Despite the wintry weather, the Sunlight Ski Team continued to post solid results.

Sunlight’s U10 girls prevailed on the podium, with Simpson taking first and Murphy finishing third. Sheldrake had two impressive runs to yield a second-place result for the U12 boys.

Rounding out the U14’s was a sixth-place finish by Adelman and a seventh-place finish by Simpson.

Hoffman also skied to two strong finishes in the women’s scored race, capping a very successful day for the Sunlight Ski Team and a successful season for the squad overall.
